2006 USPS : DC Comics Super Heroes
The Super Heroes collection is a commemorative series of postage
stamps and postcards released by the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Chapter One features super heroes published by DC Comics. The 39-cent stamps
were first issued on July 20, 2006, in San Diego, California. The series was designed by USPS Art Director and Typographer Carl T. Herrman. The stamp sheets were photogravure printed by Avery Dennison in Clinton, South Carolina.
Each stamp measures 1.225 x 1.56 inches. Each stamp pane contains ten
character images and ten classic comic book covers. The observe of each stamp includes artist credits and a brief description. The
stamp designs appear on 24-cent postcards, sold in packs in twenty. The print
run was 250 million stamps, 30,000 booklets and 600,000 postcards.
The Clark Kent / Superman stamp was penciled by Curt Swan and inked by Sheldon Moldoff. Curt Swan is the preeminent Superman
artist of the Silver and Bronze Ages. The Silver Age Supergirl and Aquaman stamps also feature artwork penciled by Swan.
The Golden Age image of Superman breaking chains is from the cover
of Superman #11 (July–August 1941). The cover was
illustrated by Fred Ray, known for his
patriotic Superman covers during World War II.
USPS previously released a Superman postage stamp in 1998 as part of the
Celebrate the Century Collection. USPS issued Chapter Two for Marvel Comics Super Heroes on
July 26, 2007. All three stamp series are collected in the Smithsonian
Institution National Postal Museum.
