2013 Canada Post : Superman 75th Anniversary
On September 10, 2013, Canada Post issued a series of
postage stamps and
postcards to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Superman. Six different stamp
designs reproduce cover illustrations from the Superman comic books
from 1939–2012.
Coil stamps and Day of Issue envelopes reprint the Special Collector's Edition
cover of Man of Steel #1 (October 1986), illustrated by John Byrne. The
back of the coil stamp roll contains
Kryptonian
message translated from English and French that reads:
"The 'S' shield is more than Superman’s family crest. It’s a Kryptonian
symbol that means 'hope'."
Ten commemorative stamps (two of each design) are available in five different
booklet covers. Six million ten-stamp booklets were produced. Five-stamp
souvenir sheets are limited to 250,000 copies. Uncut press sheets are limited
to 7,500. The stamp images and booklet covers appear on sets of five
postage-paid postcards.
The Superman 75th Anniversary collection was designed by Kosta
Tsetsekas and Jasper Murphy of Signals Design in Vancouver. The stamps were
printed by Lowe-Martin in Ottawa. The collection was showcased in the
September 2013 issue of Details magazine from Canada Post.
Superman was created by
Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, debuting in
Action Comics #1
(June 1938). Joe Shuster was born in Toronto on July 10, 1914. At age nine,
Joe hawked newspapers for the Toronto Daily Star while attending
Ryerson Public School. Clark Kent and Lois Lane originally worked as reporters
for the Daily Star in Metropolis. The Daily Star was renamed
Daily Planet in the Superman newspaper strip on November 13,
1939.
Heritage Minutes were first released by Historica Canada in 1991. The
series is comprised of one-minute short films depicting people and events in
Canadian history. The Superman feature portrays a fictional Joe Shuster and
Lois. Joe is boarding a train to visit his cousin Frank Shuster, a member of
the popular comedic duo Wayne and Shuster. Joe Shuster was played by Adam
Greydon Reid. Lois was played by Catherine Colvey. The
Heritage Minutes film erroneously places the
creation of Superman
in 1931. Jerry Siegel is completely omitted.
The Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards (Joe Shuster Awards) are
administered by The Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association. The Joe
Shuster Awards have been presented to Canadian industry figures since April
2005.
Joe Shuster Way is a residential street in Toronto built in 2006. The street
was designed and named by Urbancorp. The shape of Joe Shuster Way and the
connecting streets resembles the pentagonal Superman 'S' emblem.
In October 1995, Canada Post issued a Superman stamp as part of the
Superheroes
collection. The series honors Canadian creators in the comic book industry.
The
Superman 85th Anniversary
series of commemorative stamps was issued by Australia Post on June 13, 2023.
