Justice League toy figures were released by Mattel in 2003. The toyline is based on the Justice League animated series that aired on Cartoon Network from 2001–2004. Each 4.5 inch character is packaged with a lenticular collector card and an interlocking display base. Single figures originally retailed for $6.99. The packaging is printed in English, French, and Spanish. In 2005, the cartoon and toy line was rebranded as Justice League Unlimited.

The characters are based on designs by Bruce Timm. The figures are modeled after sculpts by Karen Palinko. The models were first revealed by DC Direct in 2001.

Superman is featured on different three cards in this series. A black-suit Superman variant includes the same collector card as the original release. In October 2004, a silver cape variation of the Superman figure and card was released in “The Rise of Apokolips” four-pack. The "Journey to Atlantis" four-pack card depicts Superman wearing an underwater breathing apparatus.
