1994 SkyBox : Batman: Saga of the Dark Knight Trading Cards
Batman: Saga of the Dark Knight Trading Cards were released by
SkyBox International
in April 1994. The series features all-original artwork commissioned to retell
major storylines from the Batman comic books. Each box contains 36 packs with
8 cards per pack. Boxes are factory-numbered to 266,660. A collector album binder for the series was sold separately. Illustrations
from Saga of the Dark Knight later appeared in the
DC Pepsi Cards series released in Mexico.
Card #45, "Two-Minute Warning," depicts a mustached Superman inhaling deadly
gas released by The Joker. The original scene occurred in chapter six of "A
Death in the Family," published in Batman #429 (January 1989). The card artwork was penciled by Jim Aparo, inked by Dick
Giordano, and colored by Patrick Pigott. The original artboard has been
released to the public.
Five foil "Spectra-Etch Portraits" are inserted in approximately 1:18
packs. The odds of finding a Batman SkyDisc are approximately 1:240 packs. SkyBox
distributed additional Batman SkyDisc holograms packaged in CD cases numbered
to 10,000.
Like many other releases of the mid-1990s, the base cards contain a UV coating.
It is common for the cards to become "bricked," or stuck together
because of improper storage.
A promo card depicting Batman and the Georgia Dome was distributed by SkyBox at Super Bowl XXVIII. Limited variants of the Georgia Dome card are serial numbered to 50,000. A promo card featuring Batman and Oriole Park at Camden Yards is serial numbered to 50,000.
