1993 SkyBox : DC Cosmic Teams Trading Cards
DC Cosmic Teams Trading Cards were released by SkyBox International in
March 1993. The DC Cosmic Teams series is comprised of 150 base cards
and 6 randomly inserted holograms. Each box contains 36 packs; each pack
contains 8 cards. The cards were also sold in two-pack bundles that include a
promotional sheet for
DC SkyCaps.
DC Cosmic Teams is follow-up to the
DC Cosmic Cards
series released 1991. The card artworks were created by popular DC Comics
artists exclusively for SkyBox. The base cards include twelve different "Team
Triptychs." The remaining cards showcase individual team members or villains.
Superman appears on cards #1 and #37 as part of the Justice League America.
The Superman and Justice League America cards were penciled by Dan Jurgens and
inked by Rick Burchett.
The "Hologram Hall of Fame" continues the checklist numbering from
DC Cosmic Cards. The Superman "Hologram Hall of Fame" artwork was
penciled by Jon Bogdanove and inked by Dennis Janke.
Superman appears on promo cards packaged with copies of
Wizard: Superman Tribute Edition. The Superman promo cards are
available in silver or gold bordered variants. Gold bordered promos were
encased and numbered to 15,000. The promo card backs contain a list of modern
Superman milestones and corresponding issues.
DC Cosmic Teams features a diverse roster that includes rookie appearances
from Vertigo characters Death and Sandman. Like the previous
DC Cosmic Cards release, Batman, Green Arrow and related characters are
absent. During this time, The Topps Company controlled card licensing for the
Tim Burton films. Batman appears the
DC Stars
series released by SkyBox in 1994.
A Deathstroke promo card #0 was given away by Great Eastern Conventions of New
York. Other promo cards were given to dealers and distributed with copies of
Wizard #19 (March 1993), Legionnaires #1 (April 1993), and
Comics Buyer's Guide.
DC Cosmic Teams began production as Series 2 of the DC Cosmic Cards set
from Impel. Wizard magazine originally referred to the collection
as "Cosmic Cards II." The numbering for the 1991 holograms is continued. In
April 1992, Impel Marketing Inc. rebranded as
SkyBox International Inc.
Artwork in this set would be reused in the 1994
DC Stars
series from SkyBox. Original DC Cosmic Teams production artworks have
been observed in private collections.
